WHAT’S THE PROCESS?
Tyn Y Wern - North Wales

When asked to design a contemporary new countryside dwelling in North Wales, we sat down with our client to understand the architectural vision, before delivering a quality project that makes the most of the leafy garden spaces and site views.

The brief was to reflect the rural setting and also complement a series of existing agricultural barns adjacent to the site. Through careful consideration and collaboration with Denbighshire County Council’s planning department, we produced a simple form with a modern twist.

Canol Y Cae - North Wales

Situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), our client wanted to create a new modern dwelling that captured the traditional rural values of the beautiful North Wales countryside.

We set about identifying key principals to explore – namely, pitched slate roofs, simple building forms and the idea of connecting new and old. The solution was to create two forms – a stone cladding section and rendered clad element, both connected with a modern glass link.

The conclusion is a simple yet elegant building that blends seamlessly with its rural setting.

Carreg Y Llech - North Wales

A retiring farmer in North Wales wanted a four-bedroom detached property, complete with a double garage. It needed to be modern in design, yet use traditional agricultural materials like zinc, slate, stone and render, as well as stay in keeping with the scenic Clwydian Range setting.

As the site of this contemporary project borders a small village, we needed to be in constant dialogue with planners. Limited road access presented some obstacles from a building and logistics perspective, and the rocky terrain meant enlisting the help of structural engineers to ensure full safety.

Once we had established a suitable method, we were able to deliver a solution that was both cost-effective and put safety first.

Our experience allowed us to negotiate a design that matched the client’s expectations and satisfied local planners, while our focus on efficiency and minimised waste helped overcome the challenge of limited access.

Ffron Ystrad - North Wales

We were invited to explore the possibilities of renovating and instilling new life into an old derelict North Wales farmhouse. With the changes in level, orientation and local vernacular among the key design principles, we set about putting a design together that met both our client’s needs and the requirements of the local authority.

The outcome is a well-considered modern luxury home that provides accommodation for an ever-changing family dynamic, together with panoramic views of the Clwydian Range.

Gordon Lane - Cheshire

Featuring a difficult and compartmentalised internal arrangement, this 1970s property has been completely remodelled to produce a contemporary home that accommodates a large sociable kitchen, with open plan dining and living areas.

The narrow nature of the plan required a two-storey extension that created obstacles during the planning process, however we successfully overcame these without compromise. The builder also required additional assistance with the cladding design, which we were only too happy to help with.

Oak Bank - Cheshire

In making this prominent Cheshire home even grander, the client brief set out the desire to create a modern extension that reflected a new way of thinking, but also sat in harmony with the existing dwelling.

Working closely with the client and local authorities, we provided a tailored solution of its own architectural typology and feel, that is sympathetically connected to the original home.

The Fisheries - North Wales

A modern, new build home situated in the beautiful North Wales countryside, on the edges of a private lake. This exceptional design utilises traditional forms but modern materials to create a home for the 21st Century. Underlined by wonderful clients who fully embrace not only the design process, but the design itself.

The client’s commitment to quality and attention to detail sought to produce an exceptional piece of architecture and a beautiful home.

The Beeches - Cheshire

Situated in the beautiful Cheshire landscape, the brief for The Beeches was to bring a new lease of life to the otherwise traditional house, in order to better connect the living space with its extensive gardens and provide uninterrupted views across the Cheshire plains.

The principal requirement for a large open plan kitchen, dining, and living space largely informed the design process. The resulting aesthetic was a contrasting, yet complimentary, timber and metal clad extension which set itself apart from the existing house whilst simultaneously reflecting its lines and proportions.

The cornerless bi-folding doors, polished concrete floors, and industrial oak and steel staircase all contribute to the renewed character of this rural property.

Hamilton Street - Cheshire

Tasked with improving the flow and useability of this beautiful Victorian property in Cheshire, D2 Architects presented the client with a contemporary proposition which would transform both the functionality and the form of this traditional semi-detached Chester home.

By utilising the space within the existing outrigger, we were able to open up the space to create a fantastic kitchen, living, and dining space that is filled with natural light and perfectly connects the house to the garden. The contemporary zinc and glass design gives an opulence of daylight and warmth into the house during the winter months, whilst creating shade and shelter in the summer.

Working together with the client and the contractor throughout the design and build process, we were able to deliver an architectural design that catered to all their needs and tastes.

Westminster Park - Cheshire

D2 renovated the plans and elevations of this beautiful home in Cheshire to meet bespoke requirements.

We introduced interlocking spaces to improve the flow of the property. This included a spacious and sophisticated kitchen, dining room and living room. The flow of the property worked to accentuate the rear garden.

We crafted a contemporary home extension, which features glazing and a timber-clad overhang. The extension is carefully designed to provide thermal comfort all year round.

The contemporary design balances the historic aesthetic of the original build. While it doesn’t mimic its architecture, it takes cues from the lines and massing of the original house.

The result is a subtle, contemporary design that enhances family living.

Garden View - North Wales

In Ruthin, North Wales, the owners of a modern house wanted to add more open space with a rear extension geared towards a balanced indoor and outdoor lifestyle.

As the site was overlooked from all sides, we needed to be respectful of the neighbours in the work carried out. The position of the first-floor windows also limited our options for roof installation. To overcome these barriers, we installed a mono-pitched (single slope) glass roof, which had the dual benefit of linking the spaces in a modern open plan environment and inviting more natural light through the extension. All windows were carefully positioned so they were not exposed.

Throughout the project, we worked closely with our clients to ensure their requirements were met, while remaining secure and respectful of the environment.
