Part-built house extension to be demolished

A partially constructed home extension in the town of Whitnash, near Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, has been ordered to be destroyed by local councillors. Despite pleas from the owner for work to continue, planning officers have agreed that the new extension will not be in keeping with the other properties located on the road.

Steve Burford, the home’s owner, petitioned Warwick District Council, saying that work had commenced on the home for a two-level extension that was granted approval in 2006. He added that support from his neighbours on either side for the development had also been given and that no property owners nearby had raised a complaint regarding the work. He also argued that after the extension, greater symmetry would be achieved between the other buildings adjacent to it, and that he had the support of the local ward councillor.

A report by planning officers explained, however, that the project was not in line with the district council’s 2017 residential design guide, which was adopted after permission had been granted.

Despite Burford’s pleas, the council voted eight to one against the extension, and all work undertaken so far must be demolished.
